Porto Maravilha, by light rail
From the Cinelândia stop, the VLT reaches Praça Mauá, the newest part of downtown, in 10-15 minutes. There you find the Museum of Tomorrow (science and the future, closed on Mondays), the Rio Art Museum, the AquaRio, the largest aquarium in South America, and the Olympic Boulevard with Eduardo Kobra's Etnias mural. One block away is the Valongo Wharf, where enslaved Africans disembarked in the 19th century, today an archaeological site recognized by UNESCO. It is the best Sunday outing downtown.
Santa Teresa and the tram
The Santa Teresa tram leaves from the station on Rua Lélio Gama, next to Largo da Carioca (about 8 minutes on foot from the hotel), crosses over the Lapa Arches and climbs the hill to Largo dos Guimarães. At the top: Parque das Ruínas, with the best free view of the bay, the Chácara do Céu Museum and streets of mansions, studios and bars. Worth half a day; the tram queue is shorter on weekday mornings.
