Distances from Downtown (Cinelândia)

From Santos Dumont Airport

It's the airport closest to Downtown — 1.7 km, about 5-10 minutes by car depending on traffic. Used mainly for the Rio-São Paulo air shuttle and other short domestic flights. You can get there by taxi, app (Uber/99), or even on foot if you're traveling light, since the distance is short.

From Galeão International Airport

18 km from Downtown, about 30-45 minutes by car outside rush hour (it can take over an hour in heavy traffic). Most international flights arrive here. Options include a taxi from the airport's official queue, an app, an executive bus, or a private transfer booked in advance.

Private Transfer with a Fixed Price

For anyone arriving with luggage or at night, booking a transfer in advance avoids the taxi queue and price surprises. The transfer, for example, includes:

• Flight tracking (the driver waits up to 45 min if your flight is delayed)
• A fixed price, with taxes, tolls and tip included
• A driver waiting at the exit with a name sign
• Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the trip

From Santos Dumont by light rail or on foot

Santos Dumont is the only airport in Rio with rail transport at the door: the VLT Carioca light rail stops right outside the terminal, and lines 1 and 3 call at the Cinelândia stop, a few blocks from the hotel. It is three stops, about 10 minutes, and you buy the ticket at the stop's machine or tap a contactless card. With carry-on luggage only you can even walk: 1.7 km on flat ground along Avenida Rio Branco or the Aterro park, 20-25 minutes.

From Galeão: taxi, app, bus, or BRT + metro

From the international airport (GIG) there are four ways to reach downtown, from the most comfortable to the cheapest:

• Licensed taxi: at the arrivals exit the taxi cooperatives have counters with a set fare by zone; downtown is one of the cheapest zones because it is the closest. 30-45 minutes outside rush hour.
• Ride-hailing app (Uber, 99): the pick-up point is signposted in the terminal. Usually a little cheaper than a taxi outside peak-demand hours.
• Executive bus (line 2018): leaves from the terminal and passes through downtown and Santos Dumont before continuing to the South Zone. Cheaper than a taxi and with luggage space, but subject to traffic.
• BRT TransCarioca + metro: the BRT runs from the airport to Vicente de Carvalho station; there you change to metro line 2, which goes straight to Cinelândia station. The cheapest and most predictable option, about 1 hour; best with light luggage.

By intercity bus or by train

If you arrive at the Novo Rio bus terminal you also have the light rail: VLT line 1 starts at the bus station and runs to Santos Dumont via Praça Mauá, Candelária, Carioca and Cinelândia, about 25 minutes. If you come by train from the Baixada or the West Zone, get off at Central do Brasil and change to the metro: Central station is on line 2, and Cinelândia is a few stations away.

Getting around downtown and reaching the beaches

Within downtown almost everything is done on foot or by light rail, which takes the same card as the metro. For Sugarloaf (Urca) and Christ the Redeemer (Cosme Velho) the practical choice is a taxi or an app, 15-20 minutes each; tours with transport included usually pick guests up at the hotel.

Rush hours and other tips

• Traffic is heavy from 7 to 10 am and from 5 to 8 pm on weekdays: from Galeão to downtown the trip can take over an hour. If you land at those times, BRT + metro is more predictable.
• Heavy rain brings downtown traffic to a standstill; leave extra time for your return flight.
• At night, take a taxi or an app to reach the hotel, even from Santos Dumont.
• With a rental car the hotel is not the best base: downtown has closed streets, little parking, and everything that matters is reached on foot or by metro.
